The Gifts

red As a Hospice counselor I have often been asked what can we say to people who have a terminal disease. Some time ago a hospice nurse told me there are four gifts you can give dying person. I have made some changes and added a gift to fit the format for our Grief-Recovery classes but the power of these gifts is still present.

Not only are these four gifts powerful for the dying to hear, it is terrific relationship advice. If we would only extend these four gifts to each other on a regular basis, our relationships would be kept current.
We have the power to give those we care about these gifts:

  1. Tell them, “I love you” and why.
  2. Tell them “thank you” and for what.
  3. Tell them, “I’m sorry” as you make amends.
  4. Forgive them in your heart which is a gift you give yourself.
  5. Tell them “good bye” when you are ready.
